OCEAN LIVING, SURFING & MARINE CONSERVATION w/ CAROLINA FERNANDES’ ‘MARESIA’

Maresia is a community and zine that rediscovers international stories on ocean living, surfing, and marine conservation, with the core objective of raising awareness on the ocean as our planet’s life support system.

The idea for Maresia emerged from Carolina Fernandes’ desire to develop a close relationship with the ocean in her design practice.

“I saw this as an opportunity to research the ocean, get to know stories of people whose lives were either influenced or dependant on it, and ultimately highlight the importance of the ocean as our planets life support system.”

Whilst giving evidence that we should make the wellbeing of the ocean a priority in our fight against climate change, Carolina also sees Maresia as a chance to work closely with marine biology students, illustrators, fishermen, and institutions, with another goal with the zine being to revert profits to organisations doing vital work on marine conservation.

The final product resulted in a zine with interviews and research articles:

“I had initially planned for Maresia to be a publication, but along the way, I concluded something with more longevity could be thought about.”

Carolina continues:

“There was no real need for another printed surfing and ocean magazine — but there was indeed the need for a community and platform to learn about these topics. It was interesting to understand what the community wanted to engage with.”
